Useful Tips When Training Your Pooch

23 July 2011 758 views 2 Comments

Effectively Training Your DogDog training, despite looking tough, requires that you know a few basics. The first thing you need to do is establish when training your pooch is to ensure that he understands that you are boss. Secondly, when giving orders, you should talk in tones that ooze superiority, similar to your second grade math teacher. Thirdly, routine is the key to training your dog effectively. Once these three techniques have been mastered, no one can stop you from being a master in the training of dogs!

Set Boundaries

You may feel the need to demonstrate the affection surging in your heart every time the cute pup tilts his head, but do not let it stop you from establishing that you are the master. If you soften too frequently, you might end up paying for it with your sandals and carpets, which it will happily chew. Treat the pup in the same way that you would handle a small kid, setting rigid rules, letting it know what’s allowed and what’s not. Make communicating through gestures a habit, as it will prompt the dog to behave in a required manner.

Communicate Effectively

Though you may not know, dogs, much like kids, know when you are really serious. If you soften a bit they know they can be playful with you. They also have an instinct for intonation, interestingly, meaning if you wish him to stay put, sound strict, whereas if you want to take him for a walk, sound enthusiastic. Your mood will be well reflected in the way he responds. This type of communication should be established with you dog if you want to calm him or spur him into action with a single command.

Be Consistent

The important thing to keep in mind is to be consistent in you approach towards your dog, if you want to train him well. You should use same types of intonations for each gesture like praise and dissatisfaction every time, to enable him to easily get used to your idea. A young pup trained to respond to a specific set of instructions will shoe quicker response as opposed to one confused with conflicting instructions. Consistency in commands is the key to training your dog well; making you more confident that he obeys you. Some ideas for maintaining consistency are the use of the same door every time you take your pup out for a walk and the same type of pat at the end of everyday before retiring to bed, to make him get used to the routine.

Such small things go a long way in making your dog’s behavior more predictable. Do not forget, however, love and affection displayed by playing with the dog games that he likes is very important. You should also reward him when he performs a task well, since he is only like a child which craves for appreciation.
